No Relation to be published in Taiwan

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Well, it’s official. Last week, we inked our first foreign publishing deal through the international network of my wonderful agent, Beverley Slopen. The respected publishing house Shui-Ling Culture and Books will translate the novel and publish it for the Taiwanese market. They hope to use the same cover design. My heartfelt thanks to Beverley Slopen who has worked tirelessly to take my humble novels beyond our borders. And now those efforts have paid off.

I often hear other authors being introduced as being translated into 23 foreign languages and sold in 34 countries, etc., etc. Well, now we can say that we’re translated into ONE foreign language… and I couldn’t be happier!

Here’s hoping this is the thin edge of the wedge and that other foreign publishing deals will follow. And if they don’t, well, we’ll always have Taiwan!

Here’s a Taiwanese book site that is already promoting No Relation and, as far as I can tell, discussing my strange publishing journey.

Up and Down hits the U.S. market tomorrow…

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Tomorrow, June 25th, the American edition of Up and Down hits bookstores south of the border. The new cover is quite similar, but eliminates the Canada Reads reference across the top of the Canadian version, and replaces the Marc Garneau blurb along the bottom with a lovely comment from U.S. broadcasting superstar, Ali Velshi. I think it’s a very clean and compelling cover. But then again, I’m biased. The book itself is a more traditionally-sized trade paperback, without the French flaps and the funky, unevenly cut pages. This version will also be available in Canada, replacing the original higher-end edition, starting tomorrow. Here’s hoping it triggers a sales resurgence here at home.

I have no idea how the novel will be received by American readers, or whether there will be deep penetration in bricks and mortar bookstores, although there was a nice Publishers Weekly review that may help. Time will tell. But it’s exciting to test another market. It’s also a bit early to know if I’ll be visiting the U.S. anytime soon to promote Up and Down. In the meantime, my fingers are crossed. Feel free to cross yours as well.

Up and Down: Chapter 5

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

In Chapter 5, David endures an uncomfortable telephone conversation with Crawford Blake, the head of TK’s Washington office, and the threat of a national postal strike hangs over the Citizen Astronaut contest.

Next week, Chapter 6, as David heads west in search of the Canadian winner of the Citizen Astronaut contest.

The voiceover that opens each episode of the podcast belongs to my friend, Roger Dey.

The High Road cracks the top 10

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Okay, you know when I wrote in an earlier entry that I would try not to be quite so self-indulgent in my blog posts? Well, I’m still committed to that, but am requesting special dispensation to record the good news that The High Road has for the first time, cracked the BookManager Canadian Fiction Bestseller List, checking in at number eight. Undoubtedly pulled along by The Best Laid Plans, which is still basking in the Canada Reads afterglow. It’s a thrill to see both of my novels in the Top 10.

I promise a humbler writing update on novel number three shortly…

Congratulations to our podcast contest winners

Friday, July 30th, 2010

The entries for our first ever podcast contest have closed and our  three winners have been randomly drawn. McClelland & Stewart will be contacting the winners soon to arrange delivery of their $50 iTunes gift cards. Congratulations to  Geoffrey, Marlene, and Janet! Many thanks to everyone who participated, and I hope all entrants will continue to listen to the podcast. Chapter 10 will be posted tonight.

The High Road podcast contest!

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

McClelland & Stewart is launching a contest for listeners of The High Road podcast. But it means you actually have to listen to the podcast, or at least Chapter 1! Here’s how it works:

  • Consider the trivia question below and send your answer to me at [email protected] with The High Road in the subject line (I want to make sure I can find your answers amidst the spam my gmail account seems to get). On July 30th, I’ll randomly draw three names from among the correct answers and the three winners will each receive a $50 iTunes gift certificate. (Sorry, but I’m told that the rules governing these contests mean that we can only accept entries from Canadian residents, excluding Quebec).

So here’s the big question:

  • In Chapter 1 of The High Road, what gift does Daniel give to Angus for Christmas?

Settle down everyone. There’s plenty of time to listen and get your answers in. I don’t want to crash my gmail account!

Thanks and good luck.
